I’ve been re-reading the Final Fantasy XIV manga because I’m too hyped about the Zodiac Age, and holy shit there is so much wrong with it.
First off the complete and utter butchering of Ashe’s character. She’s supposed to be strong physically and mentally. She is completely and utterly powerless up until she get Belias. In-game she’s just powerless in the political sense, she has no proof of her birthright and can’t support her claim to the throne. She’s brought down to the level of a commoner. This isn’t the same as being physically weak. In-game she can hold her own in a fight, and even game play mechanics support that. I’m also really annoyed with how they made her easily flustered around Balthier. She brushes off his flirting, because she has important things on her mind.
They managed to make Vaan even more annoying and useless. Instead of being Ashe’s foil he’s just there to annoy Balthier and he’s completely useless in a fight. He’s an orphan on the streets who pickpockets imperials for fun, I think he can handle himself in a fight. He’s also supposed to be relatively naive not stupid. He doesn’t know much about politics or fancy new imperial tech, because he never needed to know about it.
Finally the excessive amount of fanservice, that literally has nothing to do with what’s happening on the page. A lot of this fanservice also pops up at the mot inappropriate times. There’s a few fanels that show these two Viera getting killed and it zooms in on their breasts and they’re posed in an almost sexual pose. I think I should make a post dedicated to all the unnecessary and sometimes inappropriate fanservice in the manga.
I can’t be the only one who thinks the manga doesn’t do justice to game.
